“Begin with the end in mind”, advises Stephen Covey in his book, ‘The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People‘. Covey’s principle rests on the idea that all things are created twice: There’s a mental or first creation, and a physical or second creation. This means everything is first created in our heads.
To begin with the end in mind means starting with a clear understanding of your destination. Most of us are walking down the road of life, checking the road-signs as we go, and wondering where on earth we are. Some of us have detailed roadmaps or sat-navs, and are following the paths plotted by previous explorers. What Covey suggests is that we all need an understanding of our destination – in other words: A Vision. Without a vision, we are just meandering along the road.
How have you gotten to where you are now?
How did you get the current job you are in?
Did you study the needed courses, pursue the companies you wanted to work for, approached HR and applied for your role?
Or have you just “ended up” in your current position?
How did you get in the current physical shape your in in right now?
Did you source a nutritional plan and follow a exercise plan?
Or have you just “ended up” in your current position?
Can you see what I’m getting at? I’ve met a lot of people over the years as a P.T. and I can tell you what the resounding answer is here to both questions
Success happens by design. Buildings are constructed based upon carefully made plans. Successful businesses are run based upon carefully made plans. Athletes win after following carefully made plans. In order to be happy with anything in life it needs to happen by design. Weather your talking about fitness, a career, a relationship, a hobby or even your general well-being, it all happens by design.
If you have an area in your life you want to create change in then start to design your roadmap to success as if you are already doing it. As if you are already doing it is critical :
1. I am exercising X amount of hours per week
2. I am eating a high protein breakfast every day
3. I am eating 4-5 protein and vegetable based meals per day
4. I am only having 2 glasses of wine per week
5. I am researching who has the job of my dreams and how they got there so i know what i need to do.
Basically, I am doing what I need to do in order to get what I deserve
You now need to make this physical and thus: REAL. Physically write it down and put them somewhere where you will see them often during the day. In order to get what you want you need to be highly aware of what is your trying to achieve. The fridge or as a .PDF on your desktop is a great place to start.
As a rule nobody falls ass backwards into a pile of success. Success happens by design so start designing today what you want tomorrow!
See you in the gym!
