Stand Up Australia

Did you watch 60 minutes last night?

We do it all day long and you’re probably doing it right now. Sitting. It’s become as normal as breathing. We now sit down every day for longer than we sleep.

This report is long overdue.

If you didn’t watch it here is a link to it.  You should really watch it.

Not many people know this but I worked in an office once.  It would have been around 1999 or 2000.  I worked for optus and Telstra.  And I remember thinking, I wish I had a desk that you could stand up at.

Seems like its catching on.  Silicon valley, being ahead of its time in a lot of areas is doing it, schools are starting to do it.  Its fantastic!  And the reason is the long term impact of being sedentary.

Finally the focus is coming off of all the trends and back on to simply being more active more often.  And something as simple as standing more can really impact your health and help you achieve your weight loss or health goals.

I strongly urge you to watch this as I know so many of you sit for a living.  Here’s a few simple points from last night that isn’t meant to scare you but to motivate you to get up from your desk and move around more

When you sit the enzymes that break down fat drop by 90%!

Sitting burns almost as little energy as lying down

Blood pressure drops as soon as you stand up

People who sit 11 hours a day increase their mortlaity rate by 40% compared to those who sit for 4 hours

Does this picture look like your life?

There’s a reason i tell people that in order to achieve a weight loss goal they have to exercise every day.  Not 2-3 times a week.  And that reason is you are probably sedentary like the picture above.  How much do you think you can offset your seated lifestyle by doing a measly 30 mins of exercise 2-3 times a week?

Reasons like this is why I’ve gone back to promoting more movement for people and giving people the opportunity to train more often for less.

Have a great week and if you sit for a living, try and get up more often!
