One concept I've been talking to clients who find themselves extremely busy lately is the concept of the minimum effective week.
When I do assessments with people for the first time, often we'll work out their lifestyle, what they can and can't do, and we'll put together the perfect week of weight training, nutrition, aerobics, steps, and behaviours.
It’ll look something like this :
- 3 strength training sessions.
- 2 aerobic sessions.
- Every meal prepped and tracked.
- Every macro hit.
- 8,000 to 12,000 steps per day.
- Eight hours of sleep.
- Plenty of water.
Everything looks fantastic on paper.
Then life happens. A work trip comes up. The kids get sick. A deadline lands unexpectedly. A holiday arrives. Motivation drops. The perfect week disappears. And the guilt from not hitting all your targets sets in.
So instead of always focusing on the perfect week when life is crazy, focuson the minimum effective week.
The Minimum Effective Week
The Minimum Effective Week is the smallest amount of effort required to maintain momentum and continue moving toward your goals when your schedule is cooked.
The challenge as a trainer isn't creating the perfect program. The challenge is creating a program you can continue doing when life becomes imperfect. That way when you do have a clear schedule, you can rip and tear and make in roads into weight-loss, fat loss, weight gain etc
And when your schedule doesn't allow you can still honour your goals by hitting your minimum effective week.
The reality is you will exist on a spectrum some where between the minimum effective week and the perfect week or the floor and the ceiling on the info graphic above. Understanding this makes the journey soooo much easier to enjoy.
The above is an example of a minimum effective week
- 3 strength training sessions
- 6,000 to 8,000 steps per day
- Maintenance calories
- Protein at every meal
- Reasonable sleep
So when life inevitably pops up, you can just focus on hitting your minimum effective week and not go backwards from the all or nothing approach and quitting everything again.
Everyone's minimum effective week is different, it'll be specific to you and your lifestyle.
Why This Approach Works
The minimum effective week helps remove the emotional roller coaster that often accompanies health and fitness. Instead of feeling guilty because you're not doing everything perfectly, you focus on doing enough to get to the next gap in your schedule. Then when its time to lock in, you only have to increase your effort slightly.
The Psychology Behind Long-Term Success
Many people think motivation drives action. In reality, action often drives motivation.
Completing three workouts during a stressful week reinforces an important belief:
"I'm still someone who trains."
Walking daily reinforces:
"I'm still someone who values my health."
This is Identity-based behaviour change and it's powerful because it shifts attention away from outcomes and toward becoming the type of person who consistently shows up.
Results follow.
How Strong & Lean Australia Helps
At Strong & Lean Australia, I help people build fitness plans around real life rather than ideal circumstances.
Whether through our semi-private personal training, one on one training or online coaching programs, I focus on:
- Individualised programming
- Sustainable nutrition strategies
- Accountability and support
- Behaviour change coaching
- Long-term consistency
Many of my clients are busy adults over 40 who have spent years trying to follow unrealistic programs.
Instead of chasing perfection, I help them build systems they can maintain for years.
The result is greater strength, better fitness, improved confidence, sustainable weight loss, and fewer restarts.
Final Thoughts
Health and fitness isn't built during your best weeks. It's built during the weeks when life gets messy and you keep showing up anyway. The people who achieve lasting results aren't usually the people who have the most perfect weeks. They're the people who keep hitting their minimum standards even when motivation is low, schedules change, and life becomes complicated.
Create your minimum effective week.
Protect it.
Repeat it.
Then watch what happens over the next six months, twelve months, and beyond.
